Defining Love: Voices of Black D.C. is a short documentary and oral history project built around one question: What does love mean to you? The film gathers Black residents across Washington, D.C., making room for their own definitions of love, family, healing, accountability, joy, and community care.
The finished short will stand on its own while also contributing a local voice layer to A Revolution Called Love.
The project uses street interviews and close, direct conversations with Black Washingtonians across all eight wards. The goal is a chorus of voices that reflects the city's neighborhoods and generations. Approximately 50 interviews will become the short film, five social media pieces, and a collection of interviews and transcripts.
Production is underway, with approximately 40% of filming completed. A proof of concept is targeted for the end of September 2026. Remaining production is planned to finish before Thanksgiving 2026, with the completed short targeted for February 2027.
